Steve Rue is a pianist, composer and writer who is the producer and co-author of the Off Broadway Musical Ram in the Thicket, which opened at the Judith Anderson Theatre in New York City in 1994. Known for his flamboyent pianistic style, Steve has performed throughout the United States and Europe sharing his unique blend of comedy and virtuotistic piano playing. Steve began piano study at the age of six after tormenting his mother with constant begging to take lessons "like his older brother Tim." (Tim is also an accomplished professional pianist who has toured with the now defunct Jeremiah People.)
Steve is the composer of three other professional musicals, Dracula: The Musical, and composed the music for a theater work based on the children's classic, Heidi. Still also arranged and composed additional music for Chuck and Fanny, a two person musical about hymn writer Fanny Crosby with original music by Mark Clark and book by Michael Criss. Other national credits include arranging music for the National Tour of Godspell produced by Theater League, and composed a serious work for Alto Sax and Organ performed by standout saxaphone performer Jean Lansing at Texas State University. Steve's TV credits include performing on the Discovery Channel for the Young Scientists Competition, and national commercial appearances on Comedy Central.
Steve began composing music while still in grade school, and by middle school was writing his own arrangements for the Dixieland Band he had formed. His formal training is broad, including private lessons on clarinet, alto sax, bassoon, violin. He began studying composition with the well known serious composer Dr. Walter Mays while still in high school, and even studied privately with Dr. James Decker, the associate conductor of the local professional orchestra. He was selected to conduct the high orchestra while still in high school, and conducted on concerts on several occasions at Wichita State University.
Steve demonstrated his passion for combining humor and music early. As a child he made up silly songs to amuse his friends and family, and later found many of these same songs have entertained audiences in professional venues as well. Some of his personal favorites include his own compositions, The Walrus Song (not the Beatle's song!), and Don't Gimme Dat, Gimme Jesus, and What Do I Do With A Girl Like You? (written for his ex-girlfriend, now wife Beverly). Steve is excited about his latest project, Steve Rue and Friends, bringing the best in World Class comedic music talent to Television, Stage, and the Internet.
Steve holds a B.A. in Religion/Philosphy from Friends University, and a M.A. in Music Theory/Composition from Wichita State University.
